EU nations doubt Ukraine’s ability to recapture territory in 2023

According to anonymous European officials cited by Bloomberg, some EU nations that support Ukraine are questioning Kiev’s ability to recapture significant portions of territory this year.

The officials reportedly claimed that even a minor advance would lead to heavy casualties and require considerable amounts of ammunition and hardware.

The article alleged that after Ukrainian troops recaptured a large area last year, many people in Western capitals had high hopes, but now those hopes have largely dissipated.

Bloomberg’s sources suggested that a realistic goal for Kiev would be a 30 km advance, which could set the stage for a deeper counteroffensive in 2024.

The counteroffensive is expected to start by mid-May, but the official in charge suggested it may begin in the summer.
