The family of Daniel Mutembei, a man from Chuka in Tharaka Nithi County who was killed three weeks ago, is demanding justice.
The family alleges that the perpetrators of the crime are well-known to them, but no arrests have been made so far. They further claim that the suspects are threatening the family, who are seeking justice.
Mutembei’s father, David Ngai, stated that the police had promised to pursue the five suspects but have not made any arrests since showing him their photos.
The family is now appealing to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to intervene and help them bury their son, as they have run out of funds.
The late Mutembei was killed on March 19 at Nkwego Village, Chuka, in the Igamba Ngombe constituency. Residents of Chuka took to the streets yesterday to protest and barricaded the Meru-Nairobi highway with the victim’s coffin. The protest caused a traffic snarl-up that lasted into the evening, and irate boda riders later joined in the demonstration, blocking the highway until late morning today.
Unfortunately, the situation escalated after Tharaka Nithi Bodaboda Chairperson Willis Mugambi, also known as Kiraku, was shot dead by the police during the scuffle.
Heavy police presence is now being witnessed in Chuka town, and a team of investigators has been dispatched to the area.
At the late Mutembei’s home, there was a beehive of activities on Sunday morning, with a freshly-dug grave lying empty.
The family had finalized burial plans and prepared food but were blocked from proceeding with the burial after picking up the body. The family claims that they were assaulted during the Saturday fracas in Chuka town.
