Raila’s Chief Agent, Saitabao Kanchory, explained why two long-time rivals, presidential aspirant Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta, decided to put their differences aside and make peace. The purpose of the handshake, according to the agent, was to correct history.
During an interview on Citizen TV’s The Agent’s Brief, Saitabao explained that the two leaders’ fathers had a good relationship at first. However, Jaramogi Odinga and Jomo Kenyatta’s relationship did not end well. Kenya was thus torn between supporting the Odingas and supporting the Kenyattas, both of whom are regarded as national heroes.
The man tasked with protecting Raila Odinga’s votes stated that the famous handshake restored the peace that existed between the two leaders’ respective supporters.
“Leaders are everything,” Ole Kanchory said, arguing that the country had been focusing more on nation building than nation building. He explained that the handshake was just what Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Amollo did to build a nation.
Veronica Maina, William Ruto’s deputy chief agent, criticized her counterpart on the same show, saying that the handshake was all about leaders, whereas the Kenya Kwanza coalition was more concerned with ordinary Mwananchi.
