President Uhuru Kenyatta’s running mate in the 2013 presidential elections was Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, who now admits that he was a front-runner for the position.
Wamalwa told the Daily Nation that President Kenyatta devised a strategy that would allow the then-Jubilee alliance to gain a majority of votes in the country.
According to Wamalwa, Uhuru chose him as his deputy, while Deputy President William Ruto was to be the National Assembly Majority Leader.
“When we were planning to form the government, President Uhuru, Ruto, and I – Uhuru had chosen me as his running mate, and Ruto was to be Majority Leader, with Cherau Ali Mwakwere as his deputy – Uhuru had chosen me as his running mate, and Ruto was to be Majority Leader, with Cherau Ali Mwakwere as his deputy.
It was agreed that Ruto would become Prime Minister after constitutional modifications, with Mwakwere serving as his deputy to oversee the Coast area “Wamalwa explained.
However, the former Devolution CS claimed that under the Jubilee government, his chances of becoming the country’s second-most important person were blocked after DP Ruto short-changed him.
Wamalwa claims that Ruto was appointed as deputy president instead of him because it was assumed that the Rift Valley (Ruto’s political stronghold) would fully support President Kenyatta’s political goals, whilst Wamalwa’s Western is seen as Raila Odinga’s stronghold.
He claims that Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny can back up his assertions.
