Ruto Unveils Bold Plan to Boost Affordable Housing Fund

President William Ruto has announced plans to bolster the Housing Fund in order to make affordable housing units accessible to more Kenyans. During the official opening of Friends Church (Quakers) Donholm in Nairobi County, the President emphasized the need for a solid plan that addresses financing for low-income earners who wish to purchase affordable housing units.

He also stated that every employee who contributes 3% of their income will kick-start their journey towards owning a home. Employers will also be required by law to contribute 3% to the Housing kitty, according to the President.

The affordable housing program rollout, which seeks to increase the number of affordable housing units, will also benefit civil servants, the President added. The government’s plan to increase members’ contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has also led to a boost in the country’s savings, enabling the government to borrow locally and better manage its foreign debt.

The President revealed that the government is partnering with the county government of Nairobi to clean and green the city. He assured Nairobi residents that the government is committed to increasing the number of affordable housing units to ensure they live in decent homes.

In addition, the President urged the opposition to take advantage of the bipartisan committee to address issues of concern, rather than resorting to violent protests that disrupt and destroy the livelihoods of Kenyans. Opposition leaders were encouraged to present their grievances to Parliament instead.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who was present during the event, urged Kenyans to exercise patience as the government works to restore the economy. He emphasized that it takes time, consistency, commitment, and sacrifices to achieve economic stability. Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Affirmative Action, and Gender Aisha Jumwa, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and several MPs were also in attendance.

Mr. Sakaja highlighted the government’s digitization initiative, which aims to transform service delivery and increase revenue collections in the county. He expressed confidence that the digitalized system would improve service delivery and enhance revenue collection. Overall, the President’s announcement on affordable housing, coupled with the government’s other initiatives, highlights a continued commitment to improving the living standards of Kenyans.
