Heavy Bombardment in Sudan’s capital Continues, defying calls for ceasefire during Eid al-Fitr

Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, saw renewed fighting between warring factions despite calls from global powers for a ceasefire to mark the end of Ramadan.

Explosions and gunfire continued for six consecutive nights, with the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors reporting bombing, shelling, and clashes in several areas of the city on the night of Eid al-Fitr.

Residents have been without essential services, including food, water, and electricity, and many have been forced to stay indoors to avoid stray bullets.

The World Health Organization reported that almost 330 people have died, and almost 3,200 more have been injured in Khartoum and other regions, while the UN children’s agency UNICEF said at least nine children have been killed.

The World Food Programme warned that the ongoing violence could deepen food insecurity in the country. The dispute between the country’s military leaders centres around the planned integration of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) into the regular army as part of the final deal aimed at restoring Sudan’s democratic transition.

The fighting has had a severe impact on civilians, with many hospitals reportedly out of service due to damage, and many wounded people unable to reach medical facilities.
