Museveni urged not to sign controversial anti-gay bill by government lawyers

Lawyers advising the Ugandan government have recommended that President Yoweri Museveni should not sign the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023, which was passed by parliament last month.

The bill, which has been condemned by international campaigners and has been described as one of the harshest anti-gay laws in the world, calls for life imprisonment and the death penalty for same-sex activity.

In a letter sent to the speaker of parliament on Thursday, the government’s legal team suggested that the bill be returned to parliament for reconsideration to avoid it being challenged in court as unconstitutional.

Museveni is expected to reject the bill and return it to parliament for review.
