Authorities have commenced the exhumation of bodies from identified locations in Shakahola village, Kilifi County, suspected to be clandestine burial grounds used by followers of Pastor Paul Mackenzie’s church.
DCI detectives, with the assistance of locals, have been digging the sites for three days, and will now be excavating 19 sites believed to be secret mass graves.
The identities of the bodies and the cause of their deaths will be of particular interest if more bodies are found.
Yesterday, 15 emaciated individuals were rescued from the brink of death, while two bodies, one severely decomposed, were discovered in a secluded hideout within the vast village.
Pastor Mackenzie is accused of brainwashing his adherents to the point where they willingly starved themselves to death.
