Kenyan Family Mourns the Loss of Son Who Regretted Going to Finland for Studies

Mr Jonathan Kosgei, the father of Mr Rodgers Kipruto, who died by suicide in Finland, expressed regret that his son had left a better job as a nurse aide in Kenya to study in Finland.

Mr Kipruto was among the 202 students from Uasin Gishu County who were airlifted to Finland for a study programme in collaboration with three universities in Finland, which was later riddled with controversy due to fee arrears.

Laurea University, where Mr Kipruto was studying nursing, discontinued the students’ studies over the arrears and threatened to deport them.

Mr Kipruto had been complaining about the difficult conditions he was facing in Finland, where he was working as a cleaner to survive.

He had confided in his family about his depression, and they had sent him some money for upkeep. His father attributed his son’s suicide to depression and warned against such occurrences happening to other students.
