High-Profile Ugandan Officials Implicated in Corruption Scandal over Roofing Materials

On Thursday, Uganda’s government spokesperson announced that a large number of ministers and legislators are facing potential prosecution for their involvement in the theft of roofing materials designated for low-cost housing in the impoverished Karamoja region.

The scandal, which has caused outrage among Ugandans weary of corruption, has implicated 26 ministers, including the vice president and prime minister, and 31 legislators, with a total of 57 officials being named.

This response from the government is unusual for a high-profile corruption scandal, but the seriousness of the situation has led to a criminal investigation.

Uganda’s President, Yoweri Museveni, has personally ensured that all those involved will be dealt with appropriately.
