Uganda’s President to Discuss Controversial Anti-Gay Bill with Lawmakers

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has called a meeting with members of his ruling party to discuss the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023, which was approved by parliament last month.

The bill proposes harsh penalties for individuals involved in same-sex activity, with life imprisonment and even the death penalty for repeat offenders.

Museveni’s assent is necessary for the bill to become law, but the legislation has faced widespread condemnation from the international community and human rights activists.

The president is expected to reject the current draft of the bill and return it to parliament for reconsideration.
