Heavy fighting in Sudan enters fifth day: What you need to know

The conflict for control of Sudan has been ongoing for five days, with heavy fighting in Khartoum and Omdurman, resulting in over 270 deaths and 2,600 injuries.

The conflict is between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, leader of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemeti, leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict centers on a dispute over the integration of the RSF into the country’s armed forces. The RSF is resisting integration because it fears losing its power.

The international community has been affected, with aid workers, hospitals, and diplomats targeted, and the UN World Food Programme temporarily halting its operations in Sudan.

Both sides have accused the other of violating the previous ceasefire, and the RSF has announced a new ceasefire, which the SAF has yet to comment on.

The conflict has raised concerns about a potential escalation, while the Sudanese doctors’ committee has warned of a potential paralysis of the health system in Sudan.
