Sudan’s capital city reels as violence spreads to residential areas

Residents in a wealthy district of Khartoum, Sudan had concerns about their new neighbour, a commander from a paramilitary force, who has been blamed for past crackdowns on protesters.

Those fears were realized this week as a fight for power between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into gunfire, shelling, and airstrikes.

The fighting has resulted in the deaths of at least 185 people and has forced hospitals to close.

Residents have reported RSF troops looting shops and ejecting people from their homes, with some seeking a way out of the city.
