The Ministry of Education has announced that it will cover all funeral expenses for five students from Friends School Mbihi who died in a tragic accident on the Nakuru-Nairobi road on Tuesday. In addition, the ministry will strive to cover the medical bills for the seven students who were injured in the crash.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged to support the families of the survivors.
He stated that the Edu Afya health insurance scheme for secondary school learners will provide free medical treatment for the hospitalized students, and will also cover funeral expenses for the deceased students.
The accident occurred when a matatu carrying the students from Vihiga County collided with an oncoming lorry in Naivasha.
The injured students were taken to the Naivasha sub-county hospital, where three of them were found to be in critical condition and were transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of Kenyatta National Hospital.
A post-mortem examination has been conducted on all the bodies, and the parents are making arrangements to move them to preferred morgues. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
