Heavy gunfire, warplanes shatters 24-hour truce deal in Sudan

A 24-hour ceasefire deal in Sudan collapsed as heavy gunfire shattered the peace agreement in Khartoum on Tuesday.

The conflict between the warring factions of Sudan’s military leader and his deputy broke out four days ago, prompting a humanitarian crisis that has killed at least 185 people across the country.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a plea to army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo of the Rapid Support Forces to cease fire to reunite the Sudanese with their families and provide relief.

Reports suggest that it was unclear who was responsible for the gunfire. However, the RSF issued a statement, blaming the army for violations shortly after the truce was to take effect.

The ceasefire deal will not go beyond the agreed 24 hours. The violence also threatens to draw in other factions in Sudan and has implications for regional influence between Russia and the United States.
