From Presidential Suite to Cowshed: The sad Demise of Kabarnet Hotel

The Kabarnet Hotel in Baringo County, once a famous hotel in Kenya and the cherished place of former President the late Daniel Arap Moi, now lies in ruins. Overgrown shrubs, frayed pavements, and scattered leaves welcome visitors to the hotel compound, which is located about 500 meters from the county government headquarters.

The hotel, which was a “mini State Lodge” and had a presidential suite built specifically for Moi, was managed by Africa Tours and Hotels and opened in 1982.

The hotel’s financial troubles before its collapse are evident in cracked walls, broken windows, and faded paint. While the county government now occupies a small section of the compound, the rest of the facility is silent and deserted.

Locals use parts of the compound as a grazing field for their cattle, and cow dung can be seen littering the floors. The hotel’s dirty swimming pool is now overgrown with shrubs, and some parts of the hotel have been turned into cow sheds.

The hotel’s main entrance gate remains open, and some structures within the compound are abandoned.

Before Moi retired in 2002, Kabarnet Hotel was a household name in Baringo and the entire country, where he entertained guests, slept, and dined. However, the once-beehive of activity is now a shadow of its former self.
