Newly Appointed Members of National Climate Change Council Barred from Assuming Office

A group of Community Based Organizations (CBOs), led by the Mt. Kenya Network Forum and the Indigenous People National Steering Committee on Climate Change (IPNSCCC), have filed a petition at Milimani law courts in February 2023.

They are claiming unfairness and political infiltration into the appointments of newly appointed members of National Climate Change Council.

The CBOs argue that the appointments should have considered individuals with a deeper understanding of climate change and experience in the field to make informed decisions.

Nairobi High Court Judge Mugure Thande has granted exparte orders to extend the barring of Emily Mwende Waita, John Kioli, Umar Omar, and George Odero Outa from assuming office as members of the Climate Change Council until the hearing and determination of the petition.

However, the CBOs have expressed concerns that the respondents may have assumed office despite the orders.

The court has directed the parties involved to file and serve submissions pending the hearing of the petition, which is set for 12th June 2023.
