Matatu Protests Cause Chaos on Thika Superhighway

On Tuesday morning, commuters and other road users were left stranded after matatus that ply the Nairobi City Center-Kahawa West route blocked the Thika Superhighway.

The protest was caused by two Saccos that operate in the route against the registration of a new Sacco, Super Metro, which had announced its expansion into the route.

Super Metro had stated that it was offering free rides to all commuters between Nairobi CBD and Kahawa West for the entire Monday to celebrate its venture into the new route.

However, the operators from Kahawa West, Roysambu, Zimmerman, and Githurai 44 staged demonstrations against the entry of Super Metro, causing a shortage of matatus on the Thika Super Highway route.

The protests also prevented other motorists from accessing Lumumba Drive and Kahawa West roundabout.
