According to Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan, heavy artillery can still be heard in Khartoum, particularly in the northern and southern parts of the capital. Fighting is still ongoing in front of the general headquarters of the army, and the RSF is trying to take control of this facility.
Meanwhile, the nearby city of Omdurman is still seeing fighting, with the army using fighter jets, and the RSF using anti-aircraft missiles. Geopolitical and security analyst Ovigwe Egwegu stated that the main priority of all regional countries is to prevent the fighting in Sudan from escalating into a full-blown civil war, which could cause problems such as illegal migration and refugees flowing into already fragile countries.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for a truce and a return to negotiations for the warring parties in Sudan, stating that people in Sudan want the military back in the barracks and the civilian-led government reinstated.
Muhyiddin Ibrahim, a leader in the Democratic Bloc of Freedom and Change, called for a national consensus and a new political agreement with all stakeholders to end the current fighting, claiming that there is marginalization of political groups that contributed to the overthrow of the Omar al-Bashir regime.
The RSF, which has been involved in the conflict, was formed from government-linked militias known as Janjaweed, or Popular Defense Forces, that were used to help the army put down a rebellion in the Darfur region.
WFP suspended relief operations in Sudan after three of its employees were killed and two were injured in clashes in North Darfur, and the United Nations has condemned the killings.
The US and the UK have called for an immediate cessation of violence in Sudan, and the death toll has risen to nearly 100.
