RSF claims control of key locations in Khartoum as Sudan faces new crisis

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an African regional bloc, was working to prevent another collapse of Sudan after the army clashed with paramilitary forces on Saturday.

Both sides claimed victory, with the paramilitary forces known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) stating that they had taken control of various areas, including the main airport, the Republican Palace, and state guest houses.

The situation highlights the fractured relationship between the head of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), who heads the RSF.

The African Union and regional leaders urged the parties to negotiate, and airlines suspended flights in the region.

The RSF, which was an offshoot of the Janjaweed militia that played a role in crushing rebellion in Darfur, has had strong ties with Russia, and Hemedti has called for a full transition to a civilian-led government.
