Former MP convicted of kidnapping shot dead on live TV

An ex-politician from India who was convicted of kidnapping has been killed on live television along with his brother.

Atiq Ahmed, who was being escorted by police, was speaking to reporters in Prayagraj (also known as Allahabad) when a gun was pointed at his head and fired on Saturday night.

The incident was captured on camera and three men posing as journalists were quickly arrested. Ahmed’s teenage son had been killed by police a few days earlier.

Over the past two decades, Ahmed had been charged with dozens of crimes, including murder, extortion, and kidnapping. He was sentenced to life in jail in March this year in a kidnapping case.

Ahmed had claimed that his life was under threat from the police. The incident has sparked questions about how a man could be killed in front of both the media and the police.

The state’s Chief Minister has ordered a judicial probe into the killings and banned large gatherings to ensure peace.
