Machakos Governor, Wavinya Ndeti, has vowed to remain undeterred by political detractors who have criticized her government’s working relationship with the administration of President William Ruto. The Governor made this clear after hosting an Iftar dinner for the local Muslim community at her office grounds on Friday.
She stated that it was unfair for certain political leaders and their supporters to politicize her decision to collaborate with the national government to deliver crucial development projects in the county.
Earlier that day, the Governor had hosted President Ruto in Athi River, where he inaugurated the Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company (MAVWASCO) infrastructure project. During the visit, the President announced that the government would allocate Ksh.100 million for the construction of Athi River Stadium, as well as Ksh.250 million for the establishment of the Machakos County industrial park, among other initiatives.
The Governor emphasized that her mandate was to promote development for social and economic transformation of the people, and she must work with the national government to achieve this goal. She further stated that the fact that they are engaging with the President to support local development projects does not imply disrespect for the political party that sponsored them for election. According to the Governor, it is only fair that they consolidate efforts with the national government for the maximum benefit of the people they serve.
Governor Ndeti’s Deputy, Francis Mwangangi, defended the Governor against accusations of engaging in an “unholy relationship” with the ruling regime.
He asserted that the Governor’s leadership decisions were in the best interests of the people of Machakos and dismissed her critics as political idlers who want to create an issue out of nothing.
He further stated that by collaborating with President Ruto and his administration, the Governor and he only aim to fulfill the mandate given to them by the people of Machakos to improve their livelihoods through economic transformation.
