Clashes between Sudanese Army and Paramilitary Group in Khartoum

The capital of Sudan, Khartoum, is witnessing clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group.

The RSF claimed in a statement on Saturday that its fighters had taken control of the presidential palace, an international airport, and the Merowe military base.

Eyewitnesses reported gunfire in several parts of the city, particularly around the army headquarters and Defense Ministry, with footage showing armed individuals and heavy machine guns mounted on pickup trucks in the streets.

The RSF described the army’s actions as an attack and accused them of violating the law. The army claimed that the paramilitary group had triggered the fighting by attacking several army camps, and the air force has reportedly conducted strikes on RSF bases.

The conflict has been simmering for months due to a row over the RSF’s integration into the military, with the country’s democratic transition now in limbo. US and Russian diplomats have advised citizens to stay indoors and hope that negotiations between the warring sides will begin.
