Kenya is facing a potential diplomatic crisis after a trove of highly confidential documents was leaked from the US military’s tightly guarded registries, indicating that at least one senior United Nations (UN) official may have a deep mistrust for President William Ruto.
The Pentagon leaks were posted in a social media group by an unidentified man who worked at a military base, suggesting that the US has been spying on senior UN officials, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his deputy Amina Mohammed.
One conversation between Guterres and Mohammed, which occurred after the December 2022 African leaders summit in Washington D.C., indicates that Mohammed referred to Ruto as “ruthless” and expressed her mistrust of him.
The comments may have implications for the UN’s relationship with Kenya and other offended countries and leaders. The leaks also reveal that the US believes Guterres is too open to Russian interests, while Ukraine may have planned to attack Russia amid their conflict and Egypt had planned to secretly produce rockets for Moscow.
South Korea was also reportedly uncomfortable with bowing to US pressure to deliver arms to Ukraine.
