Criminal Teachers: Education Cabinet Secretary Speaks out Against Corporal Punishment in Schools

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has strongly condemned the surge in cases of corporal punishment against pupils by some teachers in Kisii and Nyamira counties, branding the perpetrators as criminals who should be apprehended by the police without delay.

Speaking in an interview with the Nation on Thursday, Mr. Machogu expressed his concern over the recent cases of brutality reported in the two counties, warning that those found culpable will be dismissed and prosecuted for causing harm to the students.

Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kases revealed that three of the teachers involved in the latest incident had been arrested and would be arraigned in court on Thursday.

Mr. Machogu added that teachers are expected to adhere to clear guidelines and standards of behavior, and inflicting serious injuries on students is not part of their duties.

The ministry would not tolerate any extra-legal actions by rogue teachers that contravene the Ministry of Education’s code of conduct and guidelines, he said.
