A Nairobi-based businessman is currently under investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for allegedly obtaining a loan of Sh667 million ($6.5 million) from two banks using fake documents. The loan was supposedly meant for the purchase of cooking oil from a Malaysian supplier.
According to the DCI, the trader was able to secure the loan from the banks by presenting forged shipping documents purporting to show that he had imported the cooking oil. The trader then allegedly sold the cooking oil locally and made a significant profit.
The DCI has since launched an investigation into the matter and has stated that the trader will be charged with obtaining money by false pretenses and presenting false documents.
This incident highlights the importance of due diligence when conducting business transactions, especially those involving large sums of money. Banks and other financial institutions must take measures to ensure that they are not being used to facilitate fraudulent activities.
