Mixed reactions as Mike Sonko is locked out of Mombasa gubernatorial race

Kenyans have reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision of locking embattled Ex Nairobi City Governor Gideon ‘Sonko’ Mbuvi out of Mombasa gubernatorial race.

Sonko was on Thursday cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to vie for the Mombasa County top seat a day after the Mombasa High Court trashed his disqualification of contesting.

The controversial politician has been in and out court seeking his political freedom since he was impeached as the Nairobi City County boss over integrity allegations.

However, celebrations in Sonko’s camp following his clearance by the IEBC have been cut shot by what seems to be a costly blow to his political career from the Supreme Court.

As it stands, Mike Sonko will not be on the ballot for Mombasa governorship seat, a revelation that has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans online;

Flamboyant lawyer Donald Kipkorir has said; “In Mike Sonko, the Supreme Court has restated Chapter 6 of the Constitution is about MORAL INTEGRITY . Our Courts and Public Bodies like EACC & IEBC must now have courage & bar from public office anyone with integrity issues. Chapter 6 has nothing to do with CRIMINAL LIABILITY.”

Former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has says; “The High Court Judgment directing IEBC to include Mike Sonko on the ballot paper for election of Governor, Mombasa County is Judicial embarrassment in view of the Supreme Court Judgment upholding his impeachment. Questions abound about the propriety of the High Court Judgment.”

On his part, Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi earlier said; “The 4pm Supreme Court judgment on Gov Sonko will shock many. If the Court trashes the impeachment processes and allows him to run, we will cry loud & say: “…….” If the Court upholds his impeachment and end his career, we will cry loud & say: “…….” Either way WE ARE READY!”

Mike Sonko was supposed to run for Mombasa governorship seat on a Wiper Party ticket.
