Sabina Chege and Peter Kenneth Make It to the Top of Raila’s Deputy Nomination List

On Thursday evening, the Jubilee Party released its list of candidates for the position of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party Deputy President nominee.

Peter Kenneth has been nominated alongside Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, which is unsurprising.

Peter Kenneth is a successful business executive with a long history in banking and insurance. He entered politics for the first time in 2002, when he was elected Member of Parliament for the Gatanga Constituency, where he served for two terms.

One of the legacies PK, as he is affectionately known among his large circle of friends, left in Gatanga was the best CDF utilization record. Peter Kenneth is also a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is stepping down.

Sabina Chege, a maverick, has also served two terms and has recently earned the respect of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party members for her steadfast loyalty to Raila Amollo Odinga.

Compatibility with the presidential candidate will be one of the most important qualities to look for in a running mate. Ruto’s animosity toward his boss, Uhuru Kenyatta, has influenced this new level of scrutiny.

Wycliffe Oparanya (top), Hasan Joho (left), and Peter Munya have all been nominated.

In the Azimio camp, a panel has been formed to interview those whose names have been presented.

Wiper’s Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, one of the shortlisted candidates, has stated unequivocally that he will not be grilled by any panel. UDM, Wiper, and KANU all nominated Kalonzo.

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, and Agriculture CS Peter Munya are also on the shortlist.

Raila has a plethora of options for a suitable deputy with 23 parties in the Azimio fold.

Unlike the Kenyan Kwanza camp, the Azimio wing has a diverse pool of potential candidates to choose from. The admission of NARC-KENYA leader Martha Karua to the Azimio wing complicated matters for Kalonzo, who has twice backed Raila in his presidential bid.
