According to a Gazette notice dated April 28, Chebukati has also suspended changes in voter registration. The exercises are scheduled to resume on March 13, 2023, after a nine-month hiatus.

The notice, signed by the commission’s chairman, Wafula Chebukati, explained that the decision was made to allow for voter verification ahead of the August 9 elections.

According to Articles 83 and 88(4) of the Kenyan Constitution, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC, gives notice that “applications for new registration and changes in registration of voters in Kenya and for Kenyan citizens living outside the country shall be suspended from May 4, 2022 to March 13, 2023.”

This means that anyone who has yet to register to vote has been officially barred from voting.
