Legalization of marijuana has long been a part of Sanders’ policy platform. In 2015, he introduced the first standalone marijuana legalization bill in the Senate, and in 2016, he was the first major presidential candidate to advocate for marijuana legalization. His plan includes criminal justice reform measures such as expunging previous cannabis convictions and funding for people with convictions to start cannabis businesses.
“[The drug war] has disproportionately targeted people of color and destroyed the lives of millions of Americans,” Sanders said in a statement. “When we’re in the White House, we’re going to put an end to big corporations’ greed and corruption, and we’re going to make sure that the Americans who have suffered the most from the drug war are the first to benefit from legalization.”
What plans does he have to legalize marijuana?
Sanders proposes descheduling marijuana, which would remove it from the Controlled Substances Act’s classification as highly dangerous and having no medicinal value.
Marijuana, along with heroin and LSD, is now classified in the most restrictive category under federal drug laws, Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.
Sanders would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act through an executive order issued by the Attorney General within the first 100 days of his presidency. He would also appoint agency leaders for the Justice Department and the Department of Health and Human Services to work toward this goal.
