Raila Odinga, the ODM leader and Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, has finally chosen former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth as his running mate after months of speculation.
According to reports, it took President Uhuru Kenyatta’s intervention for the former Prime Minister to settle on Kenneth, who had previously been tipped for the position.
According to sources privy to Uhuru and Raila’s secret meeting at State House last night, the ODM chief had settled on Wiper leader and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka for the position prior to the President’s last-minute intervention.
The President is said to have initially preferred Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua for the position. Raila, however, is said to have turned down the former Gatanga MP before settling on Kenneth.
Kenneth is expected to be unveiled next week at Thika Stadium in a political event attended by President Kenyatta.
Kenneth, a key figure in Raila’s Azimio la Umoja political formation, is one of the country’s most experienced politicians today, with a political career spanning over two decades.
The former MP is widely expected to succeed President Kenyatta as political kingpin of the Mount Kenya region.
Editor’s Note: Today is April 1st and its fool’s day. In terms of Raila Odinga’s running mate, the former Prime Minister has yet to select one.
