Top state officials are expected to be despatched soon to aggressively campaign for ODM leader Raila Odinga and his presidential quest, according to new information.
Some Cabinet and Principal Secretaries have already sided with Raila and have been backing him whenever they have the chance.
However, it has now been revealed that they have been included to Raila’s campaign team and even to the list of individuals who would campaign around the country, all in the hopes of ensuring Raila’s presidency is a success.
According to the Star, CS Fred Matiang’i (Interior) will lead the team, which will also include CSs Mutahi Kagwe (Health) and Peter Munya (Police) (Agriculture).
Ukur Yattani (National Treasury) and Eugene Wamalwa (Defense) are among the others, but their involvement is generating friction within the campaign team.
Raila’s campaign secretariat has been tasked with delivering the Trans Nzoia and Bungoma votes, causing consternation among Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya’s allies, who accuse Raila’s campaign secretariat of attempting to sway the vote.
“Is there a strategy to turn Oparanya into a kingpin in Kakamega?” After the Secretariat purportedly placed Busia under area governor Sospeter Ojaamong, an ODM member from Western said, “Why the zoning?”
However, Secretariat Chief Executive Elizabeth Meyo refuted reports that Oparanya is being reduced to a Kakamega kingpin, claiming that any Raila ally is allowed to campaign for him anywhere.
“It’s not a requirement that you can’t campaign in Western if you’re in Coast.” She told the newspaper, “We have a very excellent blend of how the campaigns are done.”
Raila’s campaign team in the Mount Kenya region is led by Nderitu Muriithi, the governor of Laikipia.
