Omicron: For the time being, there are no curfews or lockdowns.

According to specialists, the new Omicron variation discovered in Kenya is contagious and spreads quickly compared to other variants, including the fatal Delta variant. However, it is less lethal.

The variant will be increasingly dominant in the country and globally, according to Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, who verified the finding of three Omicron instances. However, the variant’s “impact is less among those who are vaccinated.” Unvaccinated people are more prone to become unwell, visit the hospital, and accrue debt. Allow everyone to be vaccinated as a government, and counties to reform their methods.”

Prof Matilu Mwau, an infectious disease expert, warned that while it is predicted to spread into the country, the “Omicron form” is “more contagious but less fatal.”

At least seven cases of omicron were confirmed by Uganda last week among visitors from Nigeria and South Africa who showed minor symptoms upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport on November 29, 2021, and were held in isolation.

However, Kagwe stated that while Kenyans will not be forced to have vaccinations, vaccination is a must worldwide. Passengers are required to have been vaccinated in order to board a flight, for example.

“We want to avoid lockdowns, therefore we’ll get everyone vaccinated to avoid curfews and lockdowns.” We will not be announcing a lockdown or curfew.”

In the last week, data from the Ministry of Health shows an increase in the number of infections.

Out of a total sample size of 2, 872 persons, at least 331 tested positive for the disease yesterday.

The country’s infection rate was 11.5 percent, compared to less than 5% positivity rates, which were largely experienced in October, November, and early December.

There have been 256,815 positive cases and 5,349 deaths in the country.

Despite the fact that Kenya has received more vaccines, the number of persons who have received the vaccine has been low.

A total of 8, 223, 238 immunizations had been administered across the country as of December 13th.

4, 947, 002 people were partially vaccinated, whereas 3, 276, 236 people were fully vaccinated.

According to WHO Director-General Tedros, the omicron form is spreading at a faster rate than previous variants, necessitating a rethinking of vaccination campaigns, as “seventy-seven nations have now recorded instances of omicron.” And the truth is that omicron is almost certainly present in most countries, even if it has yet to be recognized.”

He did say, though, that it’s possible that many other countries have yet to find the mutation.
