Azimio calls for ICC probe into police brutality in Kenya

Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s political party, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Kenya’s political situation in a letter sent to the Hague-based court.

Paul Mwangi, the party’s legal representative, has called on the ICC Prosecutor to open an investigation into Police Inspector General Japhet Koome over allegations of ordering police officers to kill and maim opposition protestors.

Mwangi also accused Koome of violating the constitution by usurping the powers of the Judiciary and banning the coalition party from exercising their rights under Article 37.

The opposition camp has listed nine people they claim were killed by police officers during protests in various parts of the country and requested the ICC Prosecutor to submit the information to the pre-trial chamber for authorization of an investigation.

Kenya, having signed and ratified the Rome Statute, is a party to the ICC.
