Following the recent statement by ODM leader Raila Odinga about Mitumba Business, which has sparked much debate online, Kenyans have revisited a video of DP Ruto’s similar take.
This comes after politicians and vocal supporters of Deputy President William Ruto slammed the Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate for opposing Mitumba clothing imports into Kenya.
According to him, that business is what influenced the decline of Kenya’s textile industry because most business people focused on imported clothes rather than locally manufactured clothes.

“Mitumba killed our textile industry when we introduced it. Our people are only dressed in clothes that have come from outside the country and have been worn by dead people. We will make certain that those importing mitumba have first access to market goods manufactured in this industry “Raila Odinga, Kenya
The key context in his statement is the revival of the textile industry by halting imports of mitumba clothing.
Deputy President William Ruto made a similar statement at one of his recent rallies following the selection of Rigathi Gachagua as his presidential running mate.
The DP is heard saying in the video that his government will revive most of Kenya’s manufacturing industries, particularly the textile industry, to boost the production of locally manufactured goods such as clothing.
Furthermore, he stated that the revival of these industries will create more job opportunities for the country’s large number of unemployed Kenyans.
