Rigathi Gachagua, the UDA party’s deputy presidential candidate, has played down the nomination of Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua as Raila Odinga’s running mate.
Rigathi ostensibly stated at a political rally in Kajiado on Monday that Karua will not be able to bring Mt Kenya votes to Raila Odinga.
He stated that the Mt Kenya region has already decided to support Ruto and that it is a done deal.
Gachagua believes that because President Uhuru Kenyatta has failed to persuade the Mt Kenya region to support Raila, the region has already decided who to support.
“Our beloved president attempted to take us to Raila, but we refused. Raila has now dispatched a Kirinyaga woman to transport you to his camp. Is that a possibility?” Gachagua took a selfie.
“Will you tell this woman who has now been sent by him that you have already made up your mind when she arrives? Will you tell her that if Uhuru, the current president, fails to take us there, she will?”
The Mathira MP, who was nominated as Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate, appears to be positioning himself as the political kingpin of Mt Kenya.
His abrasive personality and ability to rally the masses helped him defeat Tharaka Nithi senator in the race to be Ruto’s deputy.
Gachagua is in charge of delivering the 5.8 million Mt Kenya votes to Ruto.
Raila, on the other hand, chose Karua as his running mate in response to Gachagua’s nomination.
Through Karua, the ODM chief hopes to gain the support of the Mt Kenya region.
Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza caravan set up tents in Kajiado for a series of campaign rallies.
The leaders in attendance expressed confidence that Ruto would win the presidency.
