During a church service in Mathira, Nyeri County, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated that Kenya’s opposition leader, Raila Odinga, is just an ordinary citizen and that they cannot have direct engagement with him.
Gachagua insisted that Odinga’s demands must be addressed through elected leaders. He further explained that even before any discussion can occur, Odinga must publicly acknowledge William Ruto as the President.
Gachagua advised the bipartisan team appointed by the Kenya Kwanza coalition to listen to the Opposition’s concerns. He and the President do not have time for other engagements outside Parliament.
If Odinga wishes to resume demonstrations, he is free to do so as they can no longer yield to their demands. Gachagua rubbished the idea of a “Handshake” deal, saying it would undermine the purpose of a general election.
Odinga had dismissed claims that he was interested in a Handshake deal with Ruto, stating that it was a creation of Ruto and his allies.
