When elected president, Raila promises to improve Jua Cali.

According to Azimio la Umoja, the presidential flagbearer, Jua Kali artisans are millions of Kenyans whose skills are not recognized by the formal system. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga promised to assist these artisans in growing their businesses by providing them with opportunities and certifications.

He went on to say that skilled workers were underpaid because of a lack of recognized certification. He stated that the RPL policy would be critical in improving the lives of jua kali workers. Raila interviewed painters, tile fitters, mechanics, plumbers, and furniture makers, whom he praised for their work but regretted that they had to rely on middlemen to find work.

According to Raila, thousands of people flock to the jua kali sector mechanics and garages, where they get satisfactory work but are paid less for their expertise due to a lack of appropriate recognition and certification. This is a real-life scenario in Kenya, and a top leader addressing such an issue is commendable.

On Tuesday, Odinga held a press conference at his Karen residence, citing a lack of proper certification as the major factor holding workers back from financial well-being and outlining the steps his administration will take to improve the sector. Among the measures are policy adaptation and implementation, certification, improved operating space, higher pay, and more affordable credit.

Former Prime Minister Odinga is now calling for the policy to be implemented as soon as possible and has stated that he will welcome collaboration with like-minded stakeholders to see it through. I hope this is a genuine idea from him and not just a ploy to get voters to notice him.

Many Kenyans work in Jua Cali, and such an idea will almost certainly garner more votes for Raila Odinga if he keeps his word. I look forward to him carrying out his campaign promises as Kenya’s next president. Do you think Raila will deliver or not? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
