Following DP Ruto’s remarks on vote-rigging in the United States, problems may be developing in Kenya’s Kwanza Alliance. During his March trip to the United States, Ruto raised concerns about his intentions to rig the August 9 elections, which the IEBC dismissed as baseless and unjustifiable. Members of the Azimio La Umoja alliance have scolded Ruto for raising issues in the United States rather than resolving them in Kenya.
In reaction to Deputy President William Ruto’s allegations concerning vote rigging while touring the US, the UK, and Qatar, a number of figures close to Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister and leader of the Orange Democratic Movement, have repeated their requests to IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.
Pro-handshake leaders, led by Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed, wanted the election commission to summon Ruto, just as it did when Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege made similar claims. The Minority Whip of the National Assembly, on his part, advised Chebukati to take a tough stand and not be afraid to summon the DP to clarify his feelings. According to Raila’s righthand man, Ruto had anticipated defeat and was preparing his supporters to reject the referendum results on August 9.
