The online taxi industry in Kenya sees surge in licensed operators, with nine new players joining the existing five

The number of licensed online taxi operators in Kenya has grown rapidly in the past five months, with nine new players joining the existing five licensed by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in November 2022.

An Nisa Taxi, Hava Net, H Cab, PTG, TMNK, Amicable Travel Service, Maramoja, Move On Telecoms, and J-Ride are the latest additions to the list of licensed online taxi firms.

These new regulations, which were gazetted in June 2022, require each cab hailing company to pay an annual fee of Sh100,000 for an operating licence, be registered as a data collector or processor, and enter into transport network agreements with motor vehicle owners and licensed drivers.

The regulations also capped the commission paid to the companies by the drivers at 18 percent and mandated that each company provides a panic button on its digital platform connected to a response centre.
