The death toll from a road accident involving a matatu and a truck on the Mombasa Nairobi highway on Friday has risen to 20.
The accident happened in Taru, Kwale county, according to Coast regional police chief Titus Karuri. He warned that the death toll could rise because those rescued from the wreckage were in poor health.
Karuri had previously stated that the death toll was expected to rise because those who had been injured were in critical condition.
According to Karuri, the passenger vehicle may have been overloaded.
The bodies of casualties were seen lying on the road as the first responders attempted to assist them.
According to official data, the road is notorious for fatal accidents, claiming more than 3,000 lives each year.
The accident on Friday came just two days after four people were killed in a road accident in Machakos County on Wednesday. Three adults and a child were among the dead.
Machakos deputy police commander Mose Nthiwa said the vehicle was overloaded as it had 17 passengers on board during the 9 am crash.
