Post-mortem Reveals What Killed the Third Mukumu Girls High School Student

According to Western region chief pathologist Dickson Mchana, a post-mortem has found that the third student from Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School, who died at Kakamega General Hospital, suffered from multiple organ failure caused by a bacterial infection.

Samples from the student’s kidneys, liver, lungs, and brain were taken for further analysis, and the results will be available in a week.

The death toll from the bacterial illness outbreak at the school has now reached three. The cause is suspected to be food and water poisoning.

A parent whose daughter attends the school shared laboratory results showing that her stool sample tested positive for cholera. Wendy Abetti Oyugi, a Form One student at the school, died of gastritis as revealed in her post-mortem examination.

At least 246 students were hospitalized when the disease outbreak started, and four girls remain hospitalized in the devolved unit, according to Kakamega County Health executive Bernard Wesonga.
