Only one maize miller lowers unga prices despite duty-free imports

Over 20 local maize millers have been summoned by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mithika Linturi to explain why they have not lowered the prices of their unga brands.

This comes after a Citizen TV spot check on Tuesday found that only Ajab, a single maize miller, was selling its products below Ksh.170, despite President William Ruto’s announcement that the cost of the basic commodity would significantly decrease.

Linturi noted that Ajab was one of the beneficiaries of the government’s decision to grant maize millers permits to import maize duty-free, and he wants to ensure that the reduction in import duty is reflected in the market price.

The CS plans to discuss with the millers on Friday about their consignments and any difficulties they may be facing in raising the necessary funds to import maize.

Linturi added that millers who applied for permits but fail to bring in the commodities by August risk having their import licenses revoked.
