MPs set out improved school safety measures following student deaths

Following the deaths of three students and a teacher at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County due to food poisoning, Members of Parliament have called for urgent action to be taken to ensure the safety of food in high schools.

They have demanded that clinics with at least one nurse be established in all public schools and that health officials inspect school food to prevent deadly diseases from being contracted by students.

The lawmakers have also called for food handlers to undergo training and be screened for diseases before handling food for learners.

The committee is set to present a report to the House on ways of making learning institutions safer and recommends that the government inspect facilities and immunize students against cholera before they report back to school.
