Football Kenya Federation Premier League sides AFC Leopards and Nzoia Sugar FC will be battling for top prize in the ongoing Elijah Lidonde Memorial Cup final at Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday.
The particular tournament is organised in honour of the the late AFC Leopards legend Elijah Lidonde.
Nzoia Sugar FC qualified for the final after edging last season’s league runner-up Kakamega Homeboyz by a crazy scoreline of 5-2 at the Sports Complex in Mumias.
On the other hand, Leopards overcame Vihiga Bullets in the second semifinal to book the final ticket. The 1998 Kenyan Premier League champions beat Bullets 5-3 at the same venue.
The Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga boosted the Sunday’s final with Ksh1 million.
Leopards will be looking for ways to end their trophyless jinx that has lasted for ages. Ingwe lost the Madaraka Day Cup to their arch rivals Gor Mahia in June at Nyayo National Stadium.
On the other hand, Nzoia Sugar FC will be using the tournament as the new season’s warm up after fighting hard to avoid relegation in the last campaign.
AFC Leopards finished 6th in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League 2021/22 season despite starting poorly. Nzoia managed to finish in the 14th position.
