Mombasa-based salt producer KenSalt Limited has announced a rare price hike of Sh1,000 per tonne due to increased production costs, with the increase translating to a rise of Sh1 per kilogramme.
The notice by the company stated that the price increase will be effective from April 15, 2023, attributing the hike to the continuous rise in the cost of production.
Kensalt is a well-known salt brand in Kenya and its move comes at a time when manufacturers are facing high operational costs, including power prices, which make up about 30% of their total costs.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s recent announcement of increased power tariffs has only added to the situation, adding salt to the growing list of commodities whose prices have increased, which is impacting households hard.
