Kenya Power explained on Tuesday why some parts of the country went dark during the much-anticipated Presidential Debate.
Kenya Power stated in a public statement that there was a system disturbance at the Kisumu-Muhoroni high voltage transmission power line, which tripped a number of power circuits.
This impacted power generation from the Muhoroni Gas Turbine Station and the Turkwell Hydropower Station, resulting in outages in parts of Western, South Nyanza, North Rift, Central Rift, and Nairobi.
A number of netizens were not pleased with the message, as they tallied the losses caused by the blackout.
Despite the absence of two presidential candidates, Raila Odinga and George Wajackoyah, the debate at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa went ahead as planned.
However, Deputy President William Ruto appeared and took questions during a session moderated by Spice FM journalist Eric Latiff and Citizen TV’s Yvonne Okwara.
Recognizing that Kenya is currently facing a number of challenges, the DP stated that, despite the Jubilee administration’s efforts, much more can be accomplished if the right plans are put in place.
“We have five million unemployed young people… We now have 15 million Kenyans on the CRB blacklist.
“We have 10 million citizens who do not have access to credit in the micro and small enterprise sector, and I believe I am the candidate with a plan to move Kenya forward,” he said.
In response to the rising cost of living, Ruto stated that subsidies are a temporary solution, but it is more important to address the root cause of the problem.
He accused the Handshake of derailing the government’s Big Four plan.
“We’ve ended up here because we didn’t do certain things correctly. We had a Big Four plan in place because we anticipated this situation.
“Unfortunately, that plan fell through… It had been sabotaged. “We shelved it and went off on a tangent because of the handshake equation,” he explained.
Ruto went on to say that President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed a desire to do things differently and assemble a different team to assist him in delivering.
The DP also attacked Odinga, claiming that he skipped the debate because he lacks a strategy and an agenda for Kenyans.
“He is unable to communicate with Kenyans…He refuses to answer difficult questions. He has spent the last five years as a member of the handshake administration.
“In fact, my rival did not come here because he is not the genuine candidate.” “He’s a project,” he said.
