Kenya has announced its decision to send a team of police officers to assist Haiti in combating the ongoing violence and terror inflicted by marauding gangs. The decision was made following discussions between Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Alfred Mutua and his Canadian counterpart, who highlighted the dire situation in the country.
The Haitian gangs have expanded their territory since the assassination of then-President Jovenel Moise in 2021, leading to routine gun battles with police and leaving much of the country off-limits to the government. In February, Canada deployed a military aircraft to support efforts to disrupt the activities of Haitian gangs and address what it called a “dire security situation.”
Kenya’s decision to send police officers to Haiti is an important step towards stabilizing the country and protecting the lives of civilians. The move also highlights the importance of international cooperation and support in addressing global crises.
During the discussions, CS Mutua also discussed the Sudan crisis and offered to mediate between the two warring groups in Sudan. Both countries called for an immediate ceasefire and respect for human rights while urging countries undermining Sudan’s peace and stability to refrain from doing so immediately. Additionally, they agreed to support each other in the evacuation of their citizens.
The Kenya-Canada partnership is also set to open up opportunities for Kenyans to work in Canada and create mutual investment opportunities for both countries. Kenya is already adjusting its TVET curriculum to meet the Canadian Labour market, enabling Kenyan graduates to qualify for immediate placement in Canada. The partnership will also attract Canadian investors to Kenya and open up the Canadian market for value-added products from Kenya.
