The Kenya Kwanza government is attempting to persuade Azimio governors to halt their weekly demonstrations, led by Raila Odinga, following the end of the Holy Month of Ramadhan. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi met with Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, while Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale met with Governor Gideon Mung’aro and other Coast ODM leaders in Kilifi, as a strategy to gain the region’s support.
Mr Mudavadi praised Governor Nassir for shunning the opposition protests in Mombasa and urged Kenyans to denounce them, warning that the protests could cause political uncertainty, citing Sudan’s conflict. He also lauded Governor Nassir for “banning” the opposition protests in Mombasa and pledged support from the national government to develop the port city.
Mr Nassir refused to participate in any demonstrations organised by his political party, insisting that he is busy addressing the challenges affecting residents. Mr Mudavadi urged all Coast governors to work with President William Ruto’s government to uplift the economy, stating that the resuscitation of the economy depends on political stability.
During an Iftar dinner at Burhani Sports Club in Mombasa, Mr Mudavadi criticised Azimio leaders for bringing back talk of the International Criminal Court, warning against the instigation of chaos and encouraging politicians to restrain themselves from driving the country back into dark days. He urged Mr Odinga to accept and move on, saying that Dr Ruto is the duly elected President, and called for progress and development rather than protests.
