The Family Protection Bill, which proposes the banning of homosexuality, same-sex marriages, and LGBTQ activities in Kenya, has been submitted to the National Assembly by George Peter Opondo Kaluma, the Member of Parliament for Homa Bay Town.
The Bill seeks to clamp down on the promotion and funding of LGBTQ activities in the country. According to the proposed legislation, sex is a physical state observed and assigned at birth, and not an identity one can choose for themselves.
Parents should also retain the right to their children’s sexuality education, and the teaching of LGBTQ issues, abortion, and masturbation to children in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools should be banned.
The Bill also limits the rights to assembly, demonstration, association, expression, belief, privacy, and employment in child care institutions for homosexuals and LGBTQ persons while prohibiting adoption by them.
The penalty imposed under the proposed Act ranges from imprisonment of at least ten years to death.
The MP’s proposals have gained support from some Kenyans on Twitter, but others have criticized the Bill. The passing of a similar bill in Uganda has attracted international attention, with President Yoweri Museveni warning against the imposition of the LGBTQ agenda on Africans by Western countries.
